One of the primary directives of the Delaware Dreams private foundation is to provide for the special needs and/or wishes of Delaware children with a serious illness or health-related hardship.
Since 1987 Delaware Dreams, Inc. has supported Delaware’s children in many ways. Delaware Dreams, Inc. has responded to individual cases brought to us by a local children’s hospital when children have been involved in an accident or other health-related tragic circumstances. We support families with needed items for the ill child including clothing, food, and any other special needs requested by the family. Sadly, we have even had to help with the funeral expenses for a child when it was found that the family’s financial resources had been drained due to medical expenses.
Beyond the many individual cases, Delaware Dreams, Inc., sponsors events for the families of children being treated for cancer at the Nemours Children’s Hospital.
These events offer an opportunity for the entire family to interact in a relaxed atmosphere with the doctors and nurses they have all grown to know, but only in a hospital setting. Simultaneously, the festivities also serve as a source of support for the entire family. These events would not be possible without the tremendous support of the outstanding hospital staff of Nemours Children’s Hospital.
For the families of children being treated at the Nemours Childen’s Hospital:
-Delaware Dreams adopts several families to provide holiday gifts for all the children in the family currently being treated at Nemours Children’s Hospital;
-Delaware Dreams supports a back to school event for the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders Sickle Cell Program children ;
-Delaware Dreams supports the Young Heroes 5K Run and Walk event for children with cancer and their family;
-Delaware Dreams supports an annual holiday party for the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders Sickle Cell Program;
-Through the Nemours Children’s hospital’s office of Social Work, Delaware Dreams is a resource of support for families during their child’s illness.
Since 2006 Delaware Dreams has supported Exceptional Care for Children. Delaware’s first and only pediatric skilled nursing facility and a Top-100 Nursing Home, Exceptional Care for Children is a center for technology-dependent children requiring skilled nursing palliative and end-of-life care. In addition, Delaware Dreams works with the staff to find what can be provided to enhance the lives of the children while they are in the home-like setting.
Delaware Dreams provides Down Syndrome Association of Delaware (DSA) funding for special events that allow children with Down syndrome to have the experiences of activities while practicing independence, developing physical and emotional health, and increasing their confidence levels.
Delaware Dreams is proud to support the Delaware FAME program (Forum to Advance Minorities in Engineering) by annually awarding a two-year college scholarship to a graduating member of the Delaware FAME program.
